How Many Roses to Send, and What Each Color Means

Rose counts carry meaning, and most people sending them have no idea. Here is the traditional shorthand, plus honest advice about when it matters.

What the numbers say

• 1 rose: love at first sight, or a quiet "thinking of you".
• 3 roses: the classic three-month or "I love you" gesture.

• 12 roses: the standard declaration of love, and the safest choice if you are unsure. See the classic dozen.
• 24 roses: "I am yours, every hour of the day."
• 25 to 35 roses: congratulations, milestones and big thank-yous.
• 50 roses: love without limits. Often chosen for anniversaries.
• 101 or more: a proposal-scale gesture. 101 white roses or 201 long-stem red roses.

One rule beats all of these: an odd, generous number of fresh roses always looks better than a tired dozen.

What the colors mean

• Red: romantic love. Unambiguous, which is the point.
• White: purity, respect and new beginnings. Also the traditional choice for sympathy and weddings.
• Pink: gratitude, admiration and gentle affection. Light pink is sweet; hot pink is celebratory.
• Yellow: friendship and cheer, not romance.
• Orange and coral: enthusiasm and desire.
• Lavender: enchantment and love at first sight.
• Mixed red and white: unity, which is why they appear at weddings and anniversaries.

Bouquet, box or basket?

A hand-tied bouquet is the traditional gift and looks generous in the arms, but the recipient needs a vase. A box arrives ready to display with its own water source, which is ideal for an office, a hotel room or someone you know has no vase. A basket holds the most flowers and makes the biggest impression at a door.

French roses and long-stem roses
